Žužemberk Castle
Žužemberk Castle is one of the most picturesque castles in Slovenia. Its remains rise on a steep cliff above the Krka River. It is one of the few freely accessible castles in Slovenia, where the most important history of the castle and the characteristics of Suha Krajina are presented in various castle halls and towers.
The castle is becoming the center of cultural events in Žužemberk. A new life has begun in the wine cellar, the only preserved space in the castle, and in the castle courtyard. The most famous traditional cultural, recreational, ethnological and tourist event is the Suhokranjski dnevi in mid-July, when the castle and the castle square are visited for a few days by time travelers, knights, gentlemen, blacksmiths and beggars from a time several centuries ago. Witches come to the castle, which we call the Magic Castle of the Night of Witches, in the month of October (31.10). In December, the castle comes alive again, as an ice rink is set up in the castle as part of the Advent season in Žužemberk Castle.
Regardless of whether you walk around the castle with a local guide or in the company of your shadow, you will be able to see all the grandeur of this important medieval building, which served its owners as a military fortress. Regardless of how long you spend exploring the walls of this famous castle, we promise you that you will never tire of the views from the castle over the near and far, the higher and lower lying surroundings of the town of Žužemberk, which is bisected by the green beauty of Dolenjska, the Krka River.
